Brief History of Portovenere
The name Portovenere derives from the goddess Venus Ericina , whose temple stood on the spot where the Church of St. Peter now stands, and who, according to legend, was born from the foam of the sea.
Portovenere is an ancient seaside village, dating back to ancient Rome, as a bulwark of defense against people coming from the sea. The carruggio, which runs from the entrance to the village to the small square in front of St. Peter's, is connected to the sea abseil by stairs.
Superimposing the village is the ancient Castle, which dates from the 12th-14th centuries, and was owned by the Doria family of Genoa. It is accessible to visitors (€5).
Description of Portovenere
Facing Portovenere is Palmaria Island with the islets Tino and Tinetto.
It is currently a UNESCO site, Regional Nature Park and is also a marine protected area. From here you can walk to the 5 Terre, following paths that connect the various villages with each other offering a breathtaking view.

The village dates back to Etruscan times (7th century B.C.) and was used as a natural harbor first by the Ligurians and then by the Romans. In 1152 it was owned by Genoa, which took it back after a brief period when it fell under Pisan rule, during which time Lerici was fortified and the castle built.
